A New year, New Weaving!

Here it is 2012 and I am so excited, I just know its going to be the best ever. I have started a new warp on my loom, making some very textured art work from Alpaca, leather, semi precious stones and some of my wool hand-spun yarns. I am having so much fun creating each row of woven texture! I am working on so many new pieces, it seems the new year has filled my mind with new ideas to bring out into the world. My next show is March 10th and 11th at the Funky Finds Spring Fling. Can’t wait to bring out all my the new creations. Better get back to it, hope to see you there!

Whats Weaving Now

I have been working every chance I get on new art scarfs for my upcoming shows. I have to say, every time I finish one, it becomes my “favorite”! Color and texture are such a big part of why I love to weave and spin fiber. It is just too fun creating the color combinations and textures on each scarf. I love deciding on what yarn to lay in next and then taking it off the loom or finishing the braiding and seeing how everything comes together to create that piece of art.

I have two pieces going on my baby loom, a warp for scarfs and one for belts. I am working with two different ideas as to color so it never gets boring, weaving the same colors over and over!

Art scarf "Wild Ride"

I just finished a table scarf or bed scarf (it works for both) on my loom. It is made from recycled remnants of silk cut into ribbon yarn. The colors are so bold. It would look fantastic on a long wooden dinner table!

I am working on two scarfs and a belt right now, both looms are going! I have had so much fun putting the colors together and creating each piece.

Two Times Creativity

I currently have both my looms warped and am working back and forth between the two. It certainly adds even more variety to the process! I have been making fiber art purses. After taking the body of the purse off the loom, I sew the lining in, and sew it all together. I then warp the loom to make the straps. Once those are made, I go back and tie the fringe on both the purse and the strap and I put it all together. It takes quit a while to complete one purse but they are each so unique and fun to create, I love the process.

I have also been making art fiber necklaces out of the hand spun yarns, I love the soft fibers combined with the beautiful stones. Each one has a different twist to how it is created because the yarns are so different. Very much “one of a kind”.

Hot off the Loom!

There is no doubt about it, It is hot, 21 days straight of over 100 degrees here in Texas. For me, that means staying inside in the studio, with the AC on, weaving and creating! I just got a new loom, it is a baby wolf by Schacht. I bought it from a member of the Fort Worth Weavers Guild. It is a 24 inch portable floor loom. Now I have a loom to take to shows for people to see.

I just took off my first scarfs from the Baby Wolf loom and am now attaching the fringe. I love the colors, they are hot and spicy, wonderful to go into fall and winter with! Now I have two looms to work with. I have so many new creations in the studio and in my mind, I don’t even have to think about the heat! You Can Never Have Too Many Purses.

I have been working away here at Luna Azul Studio, putting my new woven purses together. The collection of colors, textures and fibers are endless in these new creations. There is everything from “Mystic Seas” to “Raspberry Sherbet” ! Each purse is a one of a kind, fully lined with batik fabric and the strap is made long enough to carry across the chest or as a shoulder bag. Once I get pictures taken, I will post them on my Art Fire Shop http://www.artfire.com/users/lunaazulstudio .

Not to be forgotten, my new necklaces… The yarn colors are very rich and each stone matches perfectly with the necklace. I love making yarn and then matching it with a beautiful stone.

Felting Creation

I decided the other day to try my hand at felt making. I have read some about making it and seen so many really creative things made from it so, being always up for trying something new, away I go…

I used some hand died roving to start my process. I laid four alternating layers on the cookie sheet and heated water in the micro wave.

I put some small pieces of yarn I had cut off in my weaving, to add spots of color in the felt. Once the water was hot enough, I added a little soap, put some on my hands and began to agitate the fiber. Using textured garden gloves really helped to bind the fibers together. The longer you move back and forth over the fibers, the better the fibers bind and makes a firmer piece of felt.

Felt vine

I could not get the little odds and ends of yarn to bind into the other fibers so I took them off and kept working the fibers with hot water and just a little soap. I wanted something that looked very organic, like a vine so I did some fiber into a felt rope. It was fun, I can see that it takes a lot of work to get just the right consistency for your project and there is a lot to learn but I really enjoy working with the fiber in this way.

I made the vine and some leaf/flowers. Here is the finished creation , I have it tied on a piece of bodark wood from our farm…

Just Spinning, Weaving and Painting

I have been busy spinning and weaving in my study this past month, a long with making several skeins of Art Yarn, I have completed the weaving of 5 new purses, sewn the lining in and started tying on the fringe for each of the purses.

I completed the purse I was working on at the GAP Show and have named it “Grapevine”.

I am warping the loom for gypsy scarfs, I enjoy creating those scarf so much, choosing the colors and textures and weaving each one is so much fun!

I have many projects going and loving every minute of the creative process. I have also been working on my mixed media piece, “Shadows under a Bluemoon” It is evolving over what would seem a long time but I like the way it is going. More later!

Grapevine Vintage Wine and Art Show

I had a wonderful time at the show this past weekend in Grapevine. What a great venue to display art work. My booth was next to my sister, Sharen Chatterton and her beautiful art work. Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed this great event.

A Custom Order Completed

Weaving the custom order

I have been working on the custom order Art Scarf commissioned by a customer who came to the Funky Finds show in November. I posted back a little while ago on the process of warping the loom for this project. Well, I have completed it and it is in its new home. It looks beautiful and my customer just loves the piece of art I created for her. That is the best. When I send the completed art out the door to its new owner, I am always on the edge of my seat, waiting to hear when they receive it, wondering what they think. It is so good to hear that it is just what they wanted and they think it looks fantastic! I do too! She sent a picture of the Art scarf displayed in her home.
